The name of Clair is associated with the coming of the railroad: the old Témiscouata Railway. The land on which the train station was built, in 1890, belonged to Thomas Clair. The station was named “Clair’s”. Thomas Clair’s grandparents were from the Bay of Shannon, Clare County, in Ireland. They immigrated to Canada in 1840. Like other villages in the region, this community grew on the banks of the St. John river. At one time, this small hub was very busy.
