Holt Castle is located in the attractive planned village of Holt on the English-Welsh border.
The castle, now a ruin, is all that remains of a once-great structure that physically dominated the village and provided a base for the Marcher lords who ruled this area, the lordship of Bromfield and Yale, following the conquest of Wales by Edward I in 1282-83.
The castle is situated on the banks of the River Dee, just upstream from a strategic ford and medieval bridge that were throughout the middle ages and during the Civil War the main gateway into north Wales.
