The museum is situated on 4.5 acres of lush parkland. In 1851 Philander King built the first story then it changed hands several times. John Downing purchased it in 1880, he was one of the Founders of the limestone quarries. In 1902 the second story was added and the house remained with the family until they sold it in 1969.
