The Society traces its roots to the Maitland's Womans Club. After realizing the town's history had never been recorded, the Club decided to make it their community project for 1969, and sponsored a meeting of people interested in forming a historical society. In 1970, this group became a separate organization with the mission of preserving, protecting and promoting Maitland's heritage. Early members spent most of their time collecting historical items from local founding families.
