Lamproom turnstile

Just a simple turnstile from the lamp room at Bersham Colliery. Miners passed through this turnstile every time they went on and came off shift - exchanging their tallies for lamps at the start and close of the working day.

Imagine what it must have felt like to pass through this turnstile in March 1984 knowing that the Miners' Strike had started and that you would have to decide whether to back your fellow miners in other coalfields or to continue working. Perhaps more poignant how did it feel to pass through this turnstile in March 1985, on the first shift after the dispute ended, or in December 1986, on the last shift before the colliery closed for ever.

Did you know?
Bersham Colliery's worst disaster took place in 1880 when an underground explosion killed nine miners, including the manager. There is a memorial in Rhostyllen parish church to the men who lost their lives in the disaster. The colliery is located on the edge of the village of Rhostyllen, two miles from Wrexham..
