Winding wheel (half)

The winding wheels at the top of the pit headgear are an iconic image of the coal industry and its mining communities. As long as the wheels were turning, people knew there was work at the pit. The wheels come in halves to make them easier to hoist to the top of the headgear.

The winding wheels, also known as 'sheaves' carried the rope from the engine house that was used to lift and lower the cage up and down the shaft.

The winding rope is actually made from strands of steel twisted together. Bersham Colliery won a National Coal Board competition for capping off winding rope to ensure the rope did not fray.

Did you know?
Bersham Colliery is the location for the last surviving headgear in the North Wales coalfield. The pit closed in 1986 and in contrast to many other collieries, the Bersham miners were successful in their campaign to keep the headgear as a reminder of the industry. The old offices, canteen and baths are now home to small businesses.
