Toll Office

This toll office is a simulation of the type of office in which a canal toll collector worked. Inside, you can see a traditional tall desk and clerk's stool, with a record book on the desk and an old dip-pen with an inkwell. These objects provide insight into how records would have been documented in a canal office.

The records taken would have included the names and numbers of passing boats and the weights of their cargoes and journey details, so that the tolls to be charged to the owners could be calculated.
