Medinilla magnifica

Magnificent by name and towering by nature is Medinella magnifica! The Spanish governor of the Marianna Isles was handsomely honoured when this plant was named after him in the 1820’s. It creates a curtain of the pinkest flowers you will ever see.

We grow it in the warmth and humidity it loves, in a raised bed in our tropical house, so it cascades as it would in nature. It is sometimes sold in garden centres but is very difficult to keep happy in household or conservatory conditions. Why not visit it at the botanical gardens this month and see it in all its glory!

Did you know?
It germinates in plant debris which forms in the crooks of trees and then scrambles through the canopy of tropical rainforest .
