Coat Hooks

Caricatures of the men who helped Wharton build the stone portion of his studio. From left to right: John Schmit, the cabinetmaker; the bird that sang to the men while they worked; Albert Kulp, the mason; Aaron Coleman, put the grout in; Larry Hand, the cement mixer. Above them is Wharton Esherick with his hammer and chisel.
Did you know?
One worker, Aaron Coleman, was African American, so Esherick kept this trait by portraying him in ebony wood rather than oak.
