Sir Hans Sloane's statue

The centre of the Garden is dominated by the statue of Sir Hans Sloane. Sloane was born in 1660. He was a clever opportunist who launched his medical career by accompanying the Duke of Albemarle on a perilous voyage to Jamaica. Sloane returned with a rich widow and a valuable recipe for chocolate. Back in London he cultivated rich patients, including Queen Anne, and by 1712 he was able to buy a large chunk of Chelsea. His collection of curiosities attracted many visitors including the composer George Frideric Handel. When he died in 1753 at the age of 92 Sloane left his collection to the nation, which helped found The British Museum. He is commemorated in local landmarks like Sloane Square.
