Two seater pail closet

The friendly communal loo! This is another example of an early toilet system from a local village church in South Derbyshire. Lack of water supply led to the simplest solution and possibly the worst job in the world. Every night it would be the job of the night soil men to go round a local area and empty all the used buckets, or ‘pails’.
