Charles I and Siblings

This painting was presented to Sir George Cary and depicts the three eldest children of Charles I. It shows, from left to right, Prince Charles (later Charles II), Prince James (later James II) and Princess Mary. Prince James is dressed as a girl, as was the custom for young boys up until the beginning of the 20th century. At the age of five he would have been breeched, which meant he started to wear trousers.
