Brazilian salmon tarantula

With a leg-span of up to 25 ½ cm the Brazilian salmon tarantula is one of the biggest spiders in the world.

These spiders eat insects, frogs, lizards, mice and occasionally they will eat small birds. They do produce silk but don't make a web to catch their food: they hide until a victim is going past and then pounce, injecting their venom. If the tarantula kills something before it is ready to eat it will wrap it in silk and save it for later. Although tarantulas have eight eyes, like all spiders, they don't have very good eyesight - they can only see a few centimetres in front of them.
