Katharine of Aragon

Peterborough Cathedral is the final resting place of Katharine of Aragon, first wife of Henry VIII. After their divorce she was stripped of the trappings of royalty and forced to live in a relative poverty until her death at Kimbolton Castle in January 1536. Her burial in Peterborough Abbey was a splendid affair, but Henry did not attend. It has been suggested however, that his decision to make the Abbey a Cathedral in 1541 was a memorial to Katharine.
