Elevation, Egyptian Hall, Wynnstay, architect's drawing

These drawings are as much commissions of works of art as architectural design, being far too elaborate and expensive for Sir Watkin to realise. Details such as the windows in the Egyptian Hall tower are uncomfortably placed and look out onto an enclosed roof well.
Did you know?
Many of James Byres' designs were never built and his architectural works have largely been forgotten becoming overshadowed by his role in obtaining antiquities.

Byres’ designs for Wynnstay are Baroque in style employing impressive theatrical embellishments that play with space, light and views, achieved using recesses, swag decorations, life size statues and blending of art and architecture. The Egyptian Hall contained 20 giant columns with the paintings of Italian landscapes appearing like windows out onto Italy.
