These drawings are as much commissions of works of art as architectural design, being far too elaborate and expensive for Sir Watkin to realise. Details such as the windows in the Egyptian Hall tower are uncomfortably placed and look out onto an enclosed roof well.

Many of James Byres' designs were never built and his architectural works have largely been forgotten becoming overshadowed by his role in obtaining antiquities.
