Horse Ramp

This horse ramp was built between 1904-6 when the building was extensively remodelled. It provided access to the first floor for horses, which were stabled there. These were ice delivery cart horses. The carts would be stored downstairs. Previously, horses were housed in stables along side of the building.
Did you know?
There used to be wooden rungs fitted across the slope at regular intervals. These helped a horse to get a grip on the steel incline.
