Model of Ice Cart and Horse

This 1890s cart model is painted yellow and black with gold lettering on side, reading: "Carlo Gatti and Stevenson Limited Ice Merchants. Head office 26 Villers Road, Charing Cross." The horse leading the cart is a dappled grey.

In reality, the ice inside of the cart would measure 2.5 feet long and 8 inches deep. The ice man would use a long s-shaped hook to move the ice. When carrying the ice, the ice man would protect himself with padded sack over his shoulder.

Did you know?
Ice would be delivered in a size that pre-fit the increasingly common ice boxes of family homes.
