First Nations people visited the river valley as part of their seasonal round of hunting, and later to barter with the new Europeans who came to trade and settle.
HBC first explored the area in the mid-1700s and settlements started to appear shortly after. The city of Edmonton was incorporated in 1904 and became the capital of Alberta in 1906.
With hundreds of museums, galleries and visitor attractions (including a really big mall) Edmonton is known as the cultural capital of Alberta.
