"Increases conversations about objects"
Kew Gardens
You've got lots of questions
We've got answers
If OOKL is free, how can a venue earn revenues?
OOKL does not charge venues or visitors to join the platform. If visitors want to access content on their iPhone when they are in the venue then a charge will apply and we will share those revenues with the participating venues. Many venues also charge schools for the use of OOKL's dedicated mobile phones. Back to top
What evaluations of the service have taken place?
OOKL's mobile tools have been shown to increase learning outcomes and visitor satisfaction through quite a few external reviews undertaken by leading academics (including the Institute of Education and Nottingham University) and internal assessments from participating venues. All are available here. Back to top
How can we create object content?
There are many ways to get content into OOKL:
-1- OOKL mobile phone. Log onto an OOKL mobile phone as a curator, take a picture of an object and then enter a description. It is automatically uploaded to your objects storeroom. Log onto the website, go to 'my objects' and click on 'copy to venue objects'.
-2- OOKL website. Log onto the website as a curator, create new object, upload an image, fill in 5 fields, save, repeat.
-3- Bulk import. If your collection is already digitised, give us a file and we'll import it.
-4- Scrape it. If content about your objects is on your website we can import it directly.
-5- Involve your close network (friends, volunteers, enthusiasts). Anyone can take a picture of an object, upload it to OOKL and send it to you for review and publishing. It works just like Wikipedia except you're in full control.
-6- Creating new (or editing existing) content is also a great project for your local secondary school.
All objects uploaded to the museum storeroom are assigned with a unique code. Print the codes and attach them to the objects - now you're ready to go. Back to top
Does this work with permanent and/or temporary collections?
It works with both. Back to top
Are there links from the OOKL website to our own?
Yes, all of the content you upload to OOKL is linked back to your website. The more content you put up the more people will find it and drive traffic to your website and space. Back to top
Our venue is outside the UK, will it work here?
Yes! Any venue can join - it doesn't matter where you are. If you would like to offer dedicated OOKL handsets than you will need get in touch to discuss options. Please note - UK venues with handsets cannot take the handsets abroad (until mobile phone companies sort our roaming charges that is) Back to top
We don't have a technical or new media team, how can we install something like this?
OOKL is really simple and anyone with a non-technical background can set it up and operate it in a venue. If you can use a website, then you can use OOKL - guaranteed. Back to top
I like OOKL's learning tools - are there any sources of funding?
Yes, there are pots of money available to fund the use of dedicated OOKL handsets in venues. Many venues have received funding from their Local Education Authority or Education Ministry. Other proven sources include City Learning Centres and HLF. Do get in touch as we might be able to help! Back to top
Is OOKL available on users' own devices?
Yes, iPhone users can download OOKL to their phone and pay a small fee that you set in order to access your content. This will be rolled out to other phones in due course. Back to top
